Part of what makes Sophie’s World so enjoyable in my opinion is how relatable I have found the characters in it. I’ve always had a passion for being a lifelong learner, someone who never really stops interrogating the world or trying out new disciplines or fields. This may be what attracted me to philosophy in college in the first place.

 


In Sophie’s World, both Sophie and the mysterious philosopher are confronted multiple times by this question of investigating the past and present, specifically the ideas that many of us take for granted and assume are obvious or irrelevant to everyday life. It really is a book made for curious people by curious people. (If you’re not 100% certain what I mean by that last statement, you’ll have to wait until we’ve finished reading through the book.)

 


With that in mind, there are some important relevant questions that are worth asking ourselves before we dig into the first chapters in the next lesson.
